Week 14 LaJoya, Texas

Hey Mom,

Yeah, okay I will talk in more Spanish, I always remind myself to but I never do.

That is crazy to hear about all of that happening, I hope everything works out with everybody.(I had shared with Jaden some things that were happening at my job.)

Hearing all of that going on reminds me of a talk by Elder Hallstrom in the October 2017 General Conference called "Has the Day of Miracles Ceased" In the talk he says that we need to have faith in God's plan for us and that whatever it may be it is what will be best for us and in the end we all have the chance to live for eternity.

On the topic of General Conference I ended up going back and reading some General Conference talks from April 2010 and that conference was super good so if you ever get a free moment, any of those talks are good but I really like the one by President Uchtdorf called "You are my hands" and one by President Monson called "He Is Risen"

Also this week I finally got it, an authentic tortilla recipe, we got it from Brother Hernandez our elders quorum president, I know he isn't an old Mexican lady but he has worked in restaurants (Taquerias as they are called down here) for about 10 years so he knows his stuff.

2 cups all-purpose flour
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt
3 tablespoons lard or vegetable shortening
3/4 cups warm water
Mix the dry ingredients and then rub the lard into the mixture with your hands until it makes crumbs after that add the water and mix it until it becomes a dough. Then you knead it on a floured surface for about a minute. Let it rest for 10 minutes and then divide the dough into 8 pieces and roll each into a ball. Let the balls of dough rest for 15 more minutes. After that roll each ball out to an 8 inch disk with a rolling pin and then cook in a skillet on high heat for about 45 seconds on each side. Yes it should bubble up, that is normal.
FYI you should practice these because I do not plan on eating store bought tortillas ever again :)
Highlights:
Monday:
Shipley and I went and got haircuts and it was kind of cool because we went to a barber college where they only charge you $4 for a haircut. It was also cool because I ended up having the same barber as the last time Ritchey and I went about 7 weeks ago so that was cool.
Tuesday:
We went driving to find people and we saw a literal castle, yes there will be a picture included. We didn't get the chance to knock it but we took a minute to look at it.
Wednesday:
Wednesday we ate tostadas with the Rivera family for dinner and then afterwards had family history at the church, nobody was there so we just kind of hung out.
Thursday:
Shipley and I had to go to the bathroom and we were in PDP so we went to a corner store where they had a bathroom and afterwards we were on our way out and we went down an aisle that had candles on it. These weren't just any candles however, if you lit these candles and did a specific thing or said a certain prayer things would happen, people would fall in love with you, you would get rich other things like that.  Shipley also felt a little sick on Thursday so later in the day he just decided to take a nap because he was feeling awful, luckily he is feeling much better.
Friday:
Friday morning we helped the Medina family paint their house for a few hours, after that we came to the church to do weekly planning and Brother Guerrero brought us tacos which were good as usual. Then Friday Night the Villalpando family had us over for dinner and it turned out to be like a get together thing with the Hernandez Family, Bishop and his Wife, and Brother Esparza, so we had pollo asado (grilled chicken) with guacamole and rice, it was good. So we had a good time with just a little get to know you dinner so that was nice.
Saturday:
Saturday was pretty usual we went to the church for a video call with our zone leaders which they ended up cancelling but we got there and found the Hernandez family cleaning the church so we decided to help them for about an hour until they finished. Then at 5 we had dinner with the Oyervides family at Peter pipers pizza which is like a more grown up non-themed chuck e cheese. The pizza was good though and it had been a while since we had eaten pizza. Also Saturday night at like 6:30 pm it finally happened, I saw illegals crossing the border for the first time. It was a group of like 6 people and they had already gotten across the Rio but they were just hurriedly walking down the road and then went into a house. About 5 minutes later border patrol showed up but they didn't get them, they were too late.
Sunday:
Sunday was super good, we had fast and testimony meeting and there were 65 people at church. So at the end of fast and testimony meeting bishop got up and basically said, "What are we doing? Where is everybody?" He then listed off the names of like 20 people and families who weren't there and said that we need to go out and find the lost sheep of our ward, it was dead silent and I think everyone started to realize that this needs to be fixed. Then during 3rd hour council in elders quorum everybody was talking about what to do, they kept saying we need to not just talk about what to do we need to actually do something. However at 1:00 everybody was getting ready to leave and so I being honest just said "hey wait a minute, why are we getting ready to leave, we don't have a plan" Everybody paused and then they all talked for a bit about what to do, so some basic plans were made, which is a start. Then for basically the rest of the day we went out with Brother Hernandez and visited families that weren't there. We went to visit the Nieto family and when we got there we saw that the 2 Lopez families were there (both Lopez's and the Nietos are related) we also saw the Buentello family there and they were having a little get together so they invited us in and ended up having us stay and eat with them. That was really nice, we were able to eat and talk and laugh and just have a good time.
That was my week it was super fun and we had a great time now pictures:
1. The sunset we saw
2. The castle
3. A Picture of one of the candles we saw
Love you guys and talk to you next week
Love
Elder Goodbaudy
